WCCO reports that Cody Starke was walking home from Walmart with his cousin, who had crossed the street and was waiting for Cody, when he heard his cousin shout to him. By the time Cody reeled around and looked up it was too late. He was hit by a dark colored truck and knocked to the ground.
The State Patrol believes Cody was hit by the front bumper of the vehicle and then came around the side, where his body took off the side mirror. The mirror may have caused the bulk of his injuries which include a lacerated liver and spleen, a bruised lung, and a damaged intestine, which doctors had to remove a portion of.
Investigating the mirror that was left behind, the State Patrol thinks they are looking for a 1988-1998 GMC or Chevy truck or large SUV. They are urging anyone with information about the accident to come forward.
While the State Patrol does their job to catch the person who was driving the mysterious vehicle, Cody’s family is wondering how this could happen.
Truth be told, many hit and run accidents happen because the driver is frightened of potential criminal charges. Adrenaline and panic set in, and the result can be a terrible decision. What they don’t realize before they drive away is that leaving the scene can lead to a more serious charge and much more serious penalty.
Hit and Run involving a pedestrian in the state of Minnesota is considered a felony charge and the potential sentence depends on the result of the accident. Depending on how the courts classify Cody’s injuries the driver could face up to 2 years in prison.
Knowing the cards are stacked against you after leaving the scene of an accident can make it very hard to come forward and face the music. Having an experienced attorney can help you decide the best way to handle your case, potentially greatly improving the outcome.
